Early Maths

Early mathematics at Woodlands has a real focus on the composition and pattern of number. Children have the opportunity to explore and experience number in various ways so that they have a secure mathematical understanding.

Children in the Early Years have access to high quality teaching, high quality interactions and also inviting mathematical activities in provision. They have access to traditional mathematical manipulatives and also natural materials to fit with the curiosity approach that runs through our Early Years provisions.

Maths Fluency

Woodlands follows a fluency curriculum that has a real focus on fluency of maths facts. Within KS1 this focus is number bonds to 20 for both addition and subtraction. In KS2 this focus moves onto multiplication tables. These fluency lessons are taught daily and are in addition to our Power Maths lessons. Children have the opportunity to learn and see mathematical facts through the innovative Number Sense programme.

A Mastery Approach

Power Maths White Rose sessions are taught daily from Reception Class upward. This is a whole-class mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement to help nurture confidence in maths. It is the only mastery programme perfectly aligned to the White Rose Maths progressions and schemes of learning.

Manipulatives

Because we follow a mastery approach and use materials to scaffold and support. These manipulatives are vital for understanding key mathematical concepts and offer the children the opportunity to explore these concepts further. At Woodlands, manipulatives are for everyone to use and access.

Maths across the Curriculum

Maths flows throughout the curriculum at Woodlands with strong links between Design and Technology, science and computing. These links are explicit and taught in a way to complement both subjects being taught.
